On September 30, 2026 at the University of Perugia, starting from the work of Raul Gabriel, ‘La libertà del caos. Dopo l’intelligenza artificiale‘ (Valore Italiano Editore, 2025, with a preface by the Rector of the Catholic University of Milan Elena Beccalli), the University of Perugia, Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan, and RomaTre promote a roundtable discussion to explore the conceptual fractures that the digital transition cannot resolve, but only exacerbate. They introduce the Rector of the University of Perugia, Prof. Massimiliano Marianelli, Professor Elena Beccalli, Rector of the Università Cattolica di Milano, Prof. Marco Moschini, Director of ISSUF, University of Perugia. Speakers include Raul Gabriel, artist, writer, and columnist, Prof. Giuseppe D’Anna, Director of the Department of Philosophy at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, Prof. Mario De Caro, Full Professor of Moral Philosophy at Roma Tre University.
Moderated by Prof. Denise Vincenti (University of Perugia).

Tecnologie e sacro
My theoretical framework and practical experience regarding the digital realm and artificial intelligence are grounded in the artistic projects I have created, particularly for sacred spaces.A reflection that goes hand in hand, from the point of view of technological means and reflection. Without working on the complexities of liturgical architecture and symbols I could not have guessed the the intimate, exciting, and controversial nature of the digital, which is gesture exactly likesoul is body, word which takes the form of praxis aswork allows to experience misteryTo meet new challenges while renewing ancient roots, one must be able to perceive the unified perspective of reality. Recent reflections published in the culture section of *Avvenire* address both fronts—elements that, together, make a single vision exponentially more fertile.
My way of approaching the creation of liturgical symbols in the sacred starts from a encounter with the place and the search for a physical and philological harmony which is always new, it cannot be codified in rules that must be reconstructed every time, for every architecture, every single community. A challenge that fascinates me because it is impossible to regulate once and for all, which has in its surprisein questionin painful and restless intimacy the root of his own method. Every liturgy is unique as every face is and requires a genius that is at the service of the continuity, harmony and capable of novelty.
Novelty that surprises and confirms at the same time, fertile and encounterable in its forms, in every single aesthetic choice. Two churches, two eras, two projects, two entire catecheses of form, a single body12th-century Cistercian Abbey of Rivalta Scrivia, project by Raul Gabriel © 2023, and Church of Santa Maria della Speranza Olmo, pilot project by CEI Raul Gabriel © 2015
I imagined the project proposal for the adaptation of the Duomo di Massa The project started from the specific need to revitalize a heavily frequented Baroque space that lacked expressive power. The classic diamond patterns of the existing flooring were reinterpreted through Messiaen’s compositional and rhythmic themes, envisioning the presbytery as a sophisticated musical score where decorative forms give way to a dynamic—at once joyful and rigorous—that projects into modernity. A staircase with gently curving lines extends outward via two opposing projections reaching toward the assembly and the liturgical focal points of the ambo and the presider’s chair, all while respecting the original flooring. The design features a musical ambo inspired by the organ and a central altar—symmetrical yet asymmetrical—that serves as the core of the presbytery’s dynamism. This represents a vision of a renewed Baroque—freed from decorative mannerism and capable of rediscovering mystery and reinterpreting it as a dynamic reality—offering an alternative to tired geometric exercises that can no longer speak to the complexities of contemporary scene.

Il Department of Philosophy, Catholic University of Milan, series of lectures by Raul Gabriel on AI, April-May 2026 presentsArt and Artificial Intelligence“, a series of three lessons in which the artist, writer and editorialist Raul Gabriel will engage with scholars and scientists from the University to deconstruct the impact of AI on the foundations of creativity, aesthetics, and ethics. The initiative clearly distances itself from binary narratives—uncritical techno-enthusiasm or apocalyptic catastrophism—to ground the investigation in a solid philosophical and epistemological foundation. Artificial Intelligence is analyzed not in the reductive terms of an executive tool, but as a unprecedented ontological challenge.
All meetings will be held at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (Largo A. Gemelli, 1 – Milan), from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm.
